Second update

Readers may remember that by June, nine of the boxes had been used by Tree Sparrows with 47 eggs laid and 41 young raised.  Tree Sparrows can have two or even three clutches so the boxes were monitored throughout June, July and August, Nest Record cards were filled in for any nests found and the nestlings were ringed if possible. The tables below show the results for second and third broods this year:

A4, A6 and D10 were used in late July/August and may be third clutches, but it is difficult to know which of these were second or third clutches as no attempt was made to trap the adults at the nest due to the risk of nest desertion. A4 was the only box to be used three times whilst A6 was only used in August, possibly by a pair that had already used one of the other boxes nearby.

In total this year the scheme had 89 Tree Sparrow eggs laid in 17 clutches, with 71 young raised (and ringed). Thanks again go to all those who helped in any way; lets hope for continued success next year!
