JUNE

No new birds this month just lots of Avocet watching, This paid off for everyone, by them hatching one chick on Thursday 5th July, with a second the next day. But sadly this was killed, within a week, but the other bird did make it and has successfully flown.

JULY

Long-eared Owls again bred within our recording area, and I was to see them on the 4th July, one adult and two young seen at dusk. The remarkable seabird passage from the spring continued with Storm Petrels occurring off Heysham North Harbour wall, only feet away over several days. I ticked mine on the 12th July, which was the same day I dipped Red-necked Phalarope at Leighton Moss (It still hurts!)

Curlew Sandpiper on the 20th and Wood sandpiper on the 26th, both on the Eric Morecambe pools. These were my only wader ticks for the month and my last new birds, taking my year list to 182 species and 390 points.

AUGUST

Bird of the month White-rumped Sandpiper was first seen on Wednesday evening the 29th August remaining until September 1st. It was the first for Leighton Moss and only the second for the recording area, and I beleive the tenth for Lacashire. It stayed long enough for everyone to see it, I hope!. My only other new bird for this year, was also on the EM pool and was a Little Stint. When this newsletter comes out I will be on Fair Isle eating lots of pudding. I finished the month on 184 species and 407 points.
