Welcome to the June Newsletter

The title above is a bit misleading and should really say "acting Newsletter Editor" as Phil Holland is on holiday so I have stepped in temporarily.  It has made me realise how useful it would be to build up a bank of articles from more contributors that could be used in future Newsletters.  Items short or long about outings, local patches, recommended birding places, interesting observations etc  would all be welcome the only proviso being that for reasons of space an article might have to be edited and sometimes might not be used immediately.

As might be expected at this time of year a lot of the June news concerns surveys and the need for more people to help out.  These days a lot of birders don't want to be tied down in their free time but increasingly the BTO is making their surveys more user friendly and our local LDBWS Swifts survey, for example, can easily be done with little effort and in a minimum amount of time yet the information will be of important conservation value.  Whatever the sort of birding we do, whether it's twitching, leisure birding, casual combining it with walking the dog type birding, digiscoping etc we can all do "value-added" birding by sending our observations in to recorders and/or websites to ensure that birds and their habitats are still around to give us pleasure in the future.
