Menorca (This Page)

MENORCA

Villa in St Jaime, Son Bou, Menorca. - An ideal bird watching base

  • Individual detached villa in spacious grounds
  • Panoramic sea views of Son Bou Beach
  • Private swimming pool and Jacuzzi
  • Four to five bedrooms
  • Within minutes walk of the huge reed bed at Son Bou

Menorca, August 4th-17th, 2007

  • We were based in Es Castell at the Hotel Agamenon, a lovely venue with great views over Mahon harbour which provided a number of good birds from the balcony – my kind of birding!....Chris Stott reports

Menorca, Son Bou 2nd – 9th Sept 2006

  • On this visit I was fortunate to have a 1st floor apartment and could see Purple Herons, Purple Gallinules and cattle egrets feeding on the water...Paul Lawrence reports

Menorca 12th - 19th  October 2002

  • The reedbed appeared healthy with little encroachment by trees and bushes... Menorca had had a very wet summer, with torrential rain for several days, just before we arrived. Consequently there were areas of open water visible from the highest dunes; the marshy area south of Cala Tirant had plenty of water showing and S'Albufera des Grau was probably too full for best wader watching conditions... John and Sue Roberts report.

Menorca Aug 26th - Sept 9th

  • The gorge was a wonderful place. It must be magic in spring. Many Spotted and female Pied Flycatchers were about. Cetti Warblers were calling and a nightingale was heard. A pair of Blue Rock-thrushes, were on the cliff face. Lots of Butterflies, Damselflies, and Dragonflies. I wish I could have spent more time there. The time I was in the gorge was around midday, and I reckon the vultures were in the air....Ray & June Thorneycroft report

Menorca 4 - 11 October 2002

  • A short report from Graham taylor

Menorca 16-24th May 2002

  • More a family holiday than a birdwatching trip but an idea of what one can see with a family to cater for as well. The taxi trip from the airport to Cala'N Porter augured well as raptors were seen flying in the fields alongside the main road...Phil Stidwill reports

Menorca Bird Notes 6-13th May 2001

  • The coach ride across the island was pretty good to begin with. The main road goes east-west across the middle of the island, and as we went along, I saw a couple of woodchat shrikes on telegraph wires. In the foothills around Monte Toro, at least 4 booted eagles were visible, soaring effortlessly on the thermals. Stonechats were plentiful, and a kingfisher flying near Sa Caleta Santandria was a bonus...Nick Pomiankowski reports

Menorca 21/8 -8/9/00

  • At the Algendar Gorge at least 3 Nightingales heard along the way, plus an unusually obliging Hoopoe which posed nicely on a tree branch in full view for over a minute. There were 2 Booted Eagles together patrolling the sides of the gorge, and at the end there were 10 Egyptian Vultures...Bob Groves reports

Holiday in Menorca August 2000

  • A family holiday was spent at the resort of Son Parc in the north of the island during the first 2 weeks in August. I had done some preliminary reading about good birdwatching sites in Menorca and the general opinion was that the Son Parc area was not in the top league. However I had a fine holiday there and the resort turned out to be a good place for a summer holiday by the sea and a reasonable place to spot birds. Mike Millar reports

Menorca: August 25th-30th 1996

  • I visited Menorca for a family holiday.....importantly, the Hotel was just a two minute walk from the huge Son Bou reed bed / nature reserve where I spent most of my early mornings.. John Girdley reports

Recommended Travel Books for the Balearics:

The Rough Guide to Mallorca
Phil Lee: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • This Rough Guide contains some useful information for the visiting birder: There is a chapter on Flora and Fauna with special reference to the key birds. Access details for S'Albufera, walks in the Boquer Valley and Black Vultures at the Cuber Reservoir, its all here. Rough guides have never failed me before and I wasn't disappointed with this one. Quite well researched and put together in a logical manner. I Would recommend it to any one planning to visit Mallorca.

The Rough Guide to Ibiza and Formentera
Iain Stewart, Martin Davies: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Dotted around Ibiza’s dazzling shoreline are more than fifty beaches, which range from expansive sweeps of sand to exquisite, miniature coves nestling beneath soaring cliffs. Many of the best beaches were insensitively transformed into functional holiday resorts in the 1960s, but plenty of pristine places remain if you’re inquisitive enough to seek them out. Ibiza’s hilly, thickly wooded interior is equally beguiling, the countryside peppered with isolated whitewashed villages and terraced fields of almonds, figs and olives.
